The South Pier, which was originally known as Victorian Pier, includes The Laughing Donkey, a bar which hosts free live entertainment and boasts a child-friendly beer garden with the best views in town. This pier first opened in 1893, with a choir, two brass bands and an orchestra playing in celebration. It was considered more upmarket than the other piers at the time.
Shorter and wider than North and Central piers, it was built to accommodate pavilions and its 3,000 capacity Grand Pavilion opened on the 20th May. It was only renamed the South Pier in 1930.
